Dog Behavior Collection: Managing a Behavior Support Program

Dog Behavior Collection: Managing a Behavior Support Program

Virtually no one involved in animal sheltering needs to be reminded that shelters are stressful. But we’re all so incredibly busy dealing with the fires in from of us that it’s easy to forget that one of the best ways we can be truly successful in our work is by preventing shelter intake and keeping pets in homes with the families who love them.

A strong behavior support program requires dedicated staff and/or volunteers and a structured program with goals to help those in your community who most need your help. This collection contains info from successful programs, tips for how to start a program, and info about supporting pets with unwanted behavior in their homes.

Learn how to address common behavior problems with your pets.

All shelters need to be able to provide the public with useful information on how to resolve common behavior problems in cats and dogs. When people get frustrated with their pet's behavior, their bond suffers, and if they can't figure out how to deal with the issue, they may feel that their only option is to surrender their pet to the shelter.

This talk reviews the most common behavior problems in dogs and cats and provides practical advice that can be shared with the pet owner to help keep pets in their homes. This presentation was given at the Maddie's® Pet Project "Saving Nevada's Pets" conference and made possible by the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation and supported by Maddie's Fund.

Learn how to address behavioral issues in homes to prevent re-homing.

Sometimes all that's needed is some behavioral support to prevent an animal from being rehomed. In this presentation Rebecca Lohnes of Lollypop Farm discusses various strategies and programs aimed at helping to address behavioral issues in the animal's original home before they are relinquished to a shelter. The goal is to repair, preserve, and enhance the human-animal bond in order to render relinquishment unnecessary.
