This course is part of Maddie's Community Conversations, weekly webcasts for the animal welfare field supporting pets in our community and animal shelters.
Speaker:
Dr. Lexis Ly, Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Fellow, University of British Columbia
Animal shelters work to prevent relinquishment, but we still have much to learn about what happens before an animal enters a shelter. This presentation explores the different pathways that can lead owners to seek help, rehome their pets themselves, or relinquish them to a shelter. Dr. Ly highlights the circumstances and challenges that shape these decisions through use of animal shelter and community-based data. She also discusess what this means for how shelters collect information, provide support, and develop programs to keep people and pets together.
Take-aways
• There are multiple pathways relinquishment: Owners may seek support, try to rehome their pet themselves, or turn to a shelter. These pathways can be shaped by different circumstances and challenges.
• Understanding what happens before relinquishment can help us intervene earlier: Better information about owners’ needs and circumstances can help shelters design diversion programs that keep people and pets together.
This webinar is for Return to home and intake prevention staff, Field services/animal control officers, Marketing and communications staff and anyone who is interested in learning more.
