Managing Shelter Health

Developed by Charleston Animal Society, this course replicates as closely as possible their onsite apprenticeship on shelter health. The course is authored by a team of experienced veterinarians and shelter staff and aims to provide shelter directors, managers, board members and other shelter staff with the fundamentals of shelter management, including capacity for care, standards of care and disease management. 

This course has been pre-approved for 20.00 hours of Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and continuing education units by the National Animal Care & Control Association.

Introduction to Managing Shelter Health

Begin self-paced component package. This is the first module in the Managing Shelter Health series. It covers the foundational learning students need to complete the rest of the course. All of the major diseases seen in the shelter setting are addressed, as well as recording keeping and nutrition.
Managing Shelter Health: Capacity for Care

Begin self-paced component package. This is the second module in the Managing Shelter Health series. Emphasis is on gathering and analyzing length of stay data with the aim of increasing your capacity for care and conducting shelter rounds to improve shelter flow.
Managing Shelter Health: Standards of Care

Begin self-paced component package. This is the third module in the Managing Shelter Health series. Emphasis is on providing for the mental and physical needs of the animals in your care.
Managing Shelter Health: Disease Management

Begin self-paced component package. This is the fourth (and final!) module in the Managing Shelter Health series. Emphasis is on establishing intake procedures to help keep disease out of your shelter and protocols to interrupt transmission when disease is inside your shelter. Students are guided through a shelter assessment activity to wrap up their studies.
